Iron Oak Challenge

As we head towards the end of month, our first Iron Oak Challenge is almost over. January’s challenge was to row a marathon with a partner. The catch is that ALL meters must be completed outside of class time. No warm up or wod meters count! We have already had several teams complete the 42,195 meters and even more are knocking on the door of completion. Our first team to hit the goal was Christina and Mike, they blasted past the more…

We are excited to welcome Abby & Hannah to the Charter Oak CrossFit coaching staff! Both women have solid experience as top athletes and are great assets to our team as coaches. Abby was a competitive athlete through high school and active with intramural sports during college.  After graduation, she struggled to fill the void and turned to running. In October of 2013, her roommate and boyfriend Chris wanted to try CrossFit, and came home with rave reviews. Since then, she’s been hooked. Outside more…

Programming. It’s something that the general CrossFit gym goer may not worry about too much. For most of us, we show up at the gym, are led through a warm-up, skill or strength, and then crush (or get crushed by) the WOD. As coaches, we want our members to grow. We call you athletes because YOU ARE! It’s because we want our members to evolve from general gym goers to athletes that we feel you should know what your programming more…

What is Inflammation? Last week we talked a little about the optimal ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fats (2:1) and how the standard American diet is on the order of 20:1. Too many O-6’s set up an environment for chronic inflammation…but is all inflammation bad? Of course not. Inflammation is a necessary reaction that occurs in response to some stressor. Whether that stress is from physical injury or from muscle training, inflammation is a necessary part of the repair process. more…

Omega-3’s & 6’s We’ve all heard that supplementing with omega-3s and fish oil is a good idea.  It has something to do with inflammation, right?  Here’s the simplified explanation as to why. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are essential in the diet; our bodies cannot make them from other fat sources, so they must be consumed.  These fats go on to play a number of biochemical roles; controlling inflammatory reactions, supporting the integrity of cell membranes, allowing proper trafficking of more…

primal diet

During a recent conversation with Matt, Charter Oak CrossFit’s nutritionist, about overall health, an idea was posed that I decided to turn into a personal challenge.   The plan: Follow a modified Paleo diet, dubbed by Matt as a “Primal Diet”.   The goal: See if following a modified diet to reduce potential food allergens, optimize nutrient density, and generally reduce systemic inflammation could improve my mental clarity and performance and cause favorable metabolic shifts in energy utilization.  This “Primal more…

Puper Wai and what goes on your body matters

If you are reading this, you are probably a gym rat, fitness nut or someone who cares about your overall well-being. We spend hours at the gym to release stress, work our bodies into shape and feel healthy. In the kitchen, we spend time with meal prep and cooking. We peruse cookbooks, websites and blogs for exciting healthy options with the buzz-words we have been trained to look for: “organic,” “gluten free” and “paleo.” We cruise the perimeter of the more…
